Filipino Local Communities Zero in on Sanitation

For their superior sanitation performance, 28 barangays were recognized out of 42,000 others at an Awards Ceremony hosted by ADB. Among their achievements, these barangays got all their residents to have properly functioning toilets in their homes, reduced deaths from diarrhea to zero, and cleaned up their waterways. The award was initiated by the Department of Health (DOH) and supported by ADB. DOH awarded each winning barangay with a plaque and PhP150,000.00 at a ceremony on 10 December at ADB HQ attended by about 200 Mayors, Municipal Health Officers, and village officials. PhCO's Claudia Buentjen gave the opening address. SEID's Rudolf Frauendorfer and DOH representatives handed out the plaques. View the list of awardees [ PDF: 14kb | 2 pages ].

It is anticipated this will become a yearly event, and that ADB will continue to work through DOH to reach out to grassroot communities and achieve sanitation for all.>
