    ADB-Japan Partenerships in the Philippines

    Rajat Nag, Director General, ADB Southeast Asia Department. led a mission including Tom Crouch, Country Director, ADB Philippine Country Office; Ramesh Subramaniam, Principal Economist, ADB Indonesia Resident Mission; and Yongping Zhai, ADB Principal Energy Specialist to Tokyo during 29 to 31 August 2006 for discussion with the Government of Japan on ADB's programs in Indonesia and the Philippines.

    ADB and Government of Philippines Working Closely on BIMP-EAGA

    DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES - Representatives of the Government of the Philippines and ADB met 14 August to enhance their coordination on the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). Read more

    Workshop on the Philippines' power sector reforms

    A joint Government-ADB-Japan-World Bank workshop was hosted by ADB on 11 August. Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla led the government team. Participants agreed to work toward an improved power sector.

    Philippine Finance Secretary Teves meets with senior ADB staff

    Secretary Margarito Teves met with Director General Rajat Nag of ADB's Southeast Asia Regional Department (SERD) and staff to discuss the status of the 2006 operational program. The Philippines' economic performance, particularly the fiscal consolidation program, meets conditions for ADB to consider policy-based lending.

    Meeting with Secretary Dureza

    Director General Rajat Nag of ADB's SERD and senior ADB staff met with Secretary Jesus Dureza, Presidential Advisor for the Peace Process, Chairman of the Mindanao Economic Development Council, and Presidential Assistant for Mindanao. He was also recently appointed as head of the Mindanao "Super Region", one of four identified by President Arroyo in her State of the Nation Address. Discussion focused on regional cooperation and integration, and ADB's support for the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), including the ASEAN Summit in Cebu in December, to be chaired by President Arroyo.

    ADB-IMF Meeting

    Gordon James and Robin Brooks, IMF Post Program Monitoring Mission members, met with Tom Crouch, Country Director, ADB Philippine Country Office; John Cooney, Director, ADB's Southeast Asia Infrastructure Division; Jaseem Ahmed, Director, ADB's Southeast Asia Governance, Finance and Trade Division, and other staff to review the Philippines' recent economic performance and prospects, and discuss ADB's proposed policy-based operations.

    MMDA Chairman at ADB Seminar on improving services

    Chairman Bayani Fernando of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) gave a message at the launch of e-learning toolkits on Citizen Report Card methodology and Continuous Improvement and Benchmarking techniques to improve transparency and accountability in the delivery of public services in the Asia-Pacific Region organized by the ADB in partnership with the National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG) of the University of the Philippines (UP) and the Eastern Regional Organization for Public Administration. About 120 representatives from service providers, academe, training institutions, and development agencies attended the launch at the ADB.

    ADB Setting up Public Finance Knowledge Hub at the AIM in Manila

    MANILA, PHILIPPINES - ADB has signed an agreement to establish a knowledge hub on public finance, at Philippines' Asian Institute of Management's Roberto F. De Ocampo Center for Public Finance and Regional Economic Cooperation (AIM-RFO Center). Read more

    11 July
    ADB small piped water project in Rizal province.

    A pilot project to demonstrate that thousands of urban poor can be quickly connected to piped water supply in less than a year is being implemented in Rizal province. A memorandum of agreement was signed between the ADB, which provided the Small-Piped Water Networks project grant at a cost of US$156,000, and the Manila Water Company Inc. (MWCI) which will act as ADB’s disbursing and collecting agency.
