Harmonization and Managing for Results Technical AssistanceAs part of the TA, the 8th Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was held in Isabela attended by 72 participants from the different LGUs from Region 1, 2 and CAR. Staff from the Government Procurement Policy Board-Technical Support Office (GPPB-TSO) and the ADB facilitated the workshop. Isabela Governor Grace Padaca addressed the participants and assured them that her province is complying with the Government Procurement Reform Act. See the project website.

ADB-funded Transport Terminal Opens at Kidapawan City

ADB-funded Transport Terminal Opens at Kidapawan CityA transport terminal financed through a US$30 million loan opened in August. The P64 million terminal at Kidapawan City, financed under ADB's Mindanao Basic Urban Services Sector Project, was inaugurated by Department of Interior and Local Government officials led by Undersecretary Austere Panadero, and City Mayor Rodolfo Gantuangco. All buses, jeepneys, vans and multicabs passing through the city will converge at the new terminal. See the project website*.

Launch of Key Indicators 2007

The ADB report Key Indicators 2007 is the flagship annual statistical publication of the Asian Development Bank. It says the poor are still lagging behind in the region’s rapid development even as poverty rates decline. Read the Philippine chapter [ PDF: 130kb | 7 pages ].

ADB Hosts Philippine Development Forum Meeting

The Office of the Ombudsman of the Philippines reported on recent developments in anticorruption. A sub-working group on procurement was discussed. Director Jaseem Ahmed, Southeast Asia Governance, Finance and Trade Division cochaired the event.

NEDA Deputy Director General Opens Inception Workshop for Regional Project

NEDA Deputy Director General Margarita Songco delivered the opening statement at the inception workshop in late July for a regional grant project to strengthen country diagnosis and formulation of development plans in selected countries. Participants included representatives from key government agencies, academe, research and private sector. See the project website.

About 42 military students and training staff visited ADB in July for a briefing on Philippine operations and HQ's security as a requirement of their Financial Management course.

Briefing for Supreme Court Staff

About 20 Supreme Court staff implementing an $800,000 ADB grant to strengthen the independence of the judiciary were given a briefing in July on ADB and its operations in the Philippines. They were welcomed by ADB Country Director for the Philippines Tom Crouch; Debra Kertzman, Senior Financial Sector Specialist, and Elsie Araneta, Principal Innovation and Efficiency Initiative Specialist. Press Tour to Pasig River Relocation Site

Journalists in July visiting the relocation site for 6,000 informal settlers in Rodriguez, Rizal, met with officials of the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission and tried out the new public ferry service. PRRC is implementing ADB's Pasig River Environmental Management Rehabilitation Sector Development Program. Local officials led by Mayor Pedro Cuerpo met the group. See the project website*.

Philippines Health Undersecretary Ethelyn Nieto gave an address on Fighting HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific: Strengthening Philippines response to HIV/AIDS among high risk groups at the inception workshop for a new regional grant project.
