KAZ-1592/1593: Water Resources Management and Land Improvement Project

The $40 million Water Resources Management and Land Improvement Project supports the Kazakhstan Government's policy of privatization by facilitating transfer of management of the rehabilitated irrigation and drainage systems to water users organizations upon completion the training program. This project addresses the needs of the previous privatization efforts.

Prior to the construction, lack of an established management system of existing infrastructure led to the breakdown of the drainage and irrigation system in the South Kazakhstan Oblast. As a result, the contaminated water triggered a drop of crop yields by about 40 percent. Many illnesses such as dysentery, hepatitis and typhoid were also traced to the tainted drinking water.

The irrigation and drainage improvement covers 39,260 hectares (ha) in the Makhtaraal rayon of South Kazakhstan oblast.
