Tradition and Modernity Sit Side by Side in Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is largely a desert country where displaced tribes roamed only a century ago. Even today, traditions such as carpet weaving and horse breeding run deep in a society where the camel is a sacred animal.

Rich reserves of natural gas beneath its sands, however, have provided export revenues that have also brought new buildings and wide streets to the capital of Ashgabat. Despite this, most citizens, while receiving free electricity, domestic gas and water, eke out a living in rural areas. Health and education standards are also declining.

Turkmenistan joined ADB in 2000. ADB's operational strategy for the country is to promote human and social development, sustainable growth, and regional cooperation.
