B. Technical Assistance Operations

The Bank's TA operations have assisted its DMCs in project preparation, sector studies, strengthening of institutional capability, and promoting regional cooperation. A list of TAs approved by the Bank as of the end of 1996 is provided in Appendix 6. A total of 105 TA grants were approved amounting to a total of $33.19 million; of these, 44 were project preparatory TAs, 44 advisory and operational TAs, and 17 regional TAs. The countries that have received the most DMC-specific TA are Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Viet Nam.

Sixteen Bank regional TAs have assisted workshops, research, studies, and training in fisheries. The Bank has financed fish market studies, training in fisheries stock assessment and data collection, and research and training in aquaculture. Grants have also financed a training program in fish handling and quality control, and a study on fish disease and fish health management. The implementing agencies for the Bank's regional TAs have included FAO, INFOFISH, NACA, and SEAFDEC. The Bank has also collaborated with ICLARM on a number of research programs, the more important of which include research on rice-fish farming systems and genetic improvement of tilapia species in Asia, and dissemination and evaluation of genetically improved tilapia. Some of these research projects have led to outcomes of substantial significance.
