ADB approved the Policy on Indigenous Peoples in 1998. This policy works to ensure the equality of opportunity for indigenous peoples, and that interventions affecting indigenous peoples are

consistent with the needs and aspirations of affected peoples
compatible in substance and structure with affected peoples' cultural, social, and economic institutions
conceived, planned, and implemented with the informed participation of affected communities

This policy was developed in close consultation with representatives of indigenous peoples' communities in ADB's developing member countries.
