ADB approved the Policy on Indigenous Peoples in 1998. This policy works to ensure the equality of opportunity for indigenous peoples, and that interventions affecting indigenous peoples are

  • consistent with the needs and aspirations of affected peoples
  • compatible in substance and structure with affected peoples' cultural, social, and economic institutions
  • conceived, planned, and implemented with the informed participation of affected communities

This policy was developed in close consultation with representatives of indigenous peoples' communities in ADB's developing member countries.
