Implementing Agency

Reputed NGOs, in close collaboration with DOI, under the general supervision of the Project Coordinator of the counterpart loan project, and working with Water Users Associations and women's credit committees

Coordinating Body/ Steering Committee/ Project Advisory Board

Project Management Unit will be established in DOI. The JFPR Project Coordinator of the counterpart loan project with assistance from the Department of Agriculture, would coordinate the Project activities.

Scope

The project targets 150,000 poor people in 25,000 households in the hills and Terai.

Objectives

Overall Objective

  • Long-term: Reduce poverty by optimizing the productivity of poor and marginal farmers in the small-scale irrigation schemes being established under the counterpart loan project.
  • Specific: Increase income of women and employment in rural areas.

Project Purpose

Improve seed multiplication, and strengthen the capacity of the communities in sustainable credit management.

Main Project Components and Activities

  • Seed multiplication: provide start up financing
  • Micro-credit: establish revolving credit funds in 150 subprojects, develop operational procedures and manuals, and establish women credit committees in subprojects
  • Training: intensive community mobilization; financial management for micro-credit; savings and accounting, agricultural extension, storage and marketing; and skills training for women
  • Project management
  • Benefit monitoring and evaluation

NGO Cooperation

NGOs will play a lead role in community mobilization, credit operation, training, and impact evaluation.
