On 26 December 2004, Asia was struck by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. The disaster, one of the worst in recent history, claimed many lives and displaced nearly 1.2 million people.

ADB responded quickly to the disaster by launching its largest grant program. This report provides a summary of ADB's ongoing emergency assistance, rehabilitation and reconstruction work in India, Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
