ADB's Microfinance Development Strategy recognizes the importance of commercialization, not as an end in itself but as a means to expand the outreach of microfinance services to poor and low-income households and their microenterprises on a sustainable basis.

In 2000, ADB approved a regional technical assistance project on Commercialization of Microfinance. The main objective of the project was to improve understanding of the process of microfinance commercialization as well as its challenges, implications, and prospects. The project consisted of country studies, in-country workshops, a regional study and a regional workshop to discuss cross-country experiences and sharing and dissemination of knowledge gathered through the technical assistance project.

The book highlights the different perspectives on commercialization of microfinance, identifies issues and challenges relating to commercialization and recommends approaches to promote the process of commercialization. The book provides excellent insights into the issues of commercialization of microfinance in the region.
