Who is Facing Hardship?

“We are all experiencing hardship here”

Rural and urban communities consulted during the assessment said that “we are all experiencing hardship here.” This sense of shared disadvantage was common to all four regional divisions in the country. However, certain groups were identified to be suffering more hardship than the rest of the community. They were:

  • Single mothers with little or no means of support,
  • Widows,
  • Elderly people neglected by family members,
  • Mentally challenged and physically handicapped people,
  • Orphans,
  • Jobless people,
  • People who only eat one full meal a day, and
  • Beggars.

Most people surveyed believed that people facing hardship and poverty live in rural areas, while almost one-third said poverty is worse in urban areas.
