BAN: Gas Transmission and Development Project
Resettlement Framework and Plans

The Gas Transmission and Development Project will finance a part of the Bangladesh Government’s plan to increase natural gas access to less developed areas of the country to enhance income-generating activities and to promote more balanced regional development.

Bangladesh has significant natural gas reserves. However, because of the relatively low utilization of these reserves, the country’s commercial, industrial, and rural development has been constrained. In addition, the country’s gas infrastructure is in poor condition due to inadequate funding for maintenance and expansion. As such, further development of Bangladesh gas reserves to enable greater economic growth is vital.

It is currently estimated that the subprojects for gas transmission will involve permanent acquisition of 160 hectares (ha) and temporary acquisition of 336 ha. Permananent land acquisition will be for 46, 72, and 41 ha for Monohardi-Jamuna Bridge East Bank, Nalka-Bheramara, and Bonpara-Rajshahi, respectively. Temporary land acquisition will be for 75, 131, and 131 ha for Monohardi-Jamuna Bridge East Bank, Nalka-Bheramara, and Bonpara-Rajshahi, respectively.; and the subproject for appraisal and field development will involve the temporary acquisition of 270 ha. No land acquisition (permanent or temporary) from private is foreseen for the Distribution component. Installation of compressors is going to be done on EA’s premises.

Final location and impacts of transmission pipelines will be identified during the final design stage. BGTD also prepared a resettlement framework [ PDF: 64kb | 13 pages ] to address the involuntary resettlement effects that may be identified during project implementation.

The involuntary resettlement safeguard measures adopted by BWDB for this project are summarized in this report.
