SRI: Secondary Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project
Resettlement Plan and Draft Compensation Plan

The proposed Secondary Towns Water Supply and and Sanitation Project in Sri Lanka will benefit 647,000 people in the cities of Batticaloa, Hambantota, Matara, Muttur and Polonnaruwa and about 322,000 in the rural areas of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. About 171,500 people will benefit from safe sanitation facilities.

Measures were taken by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) to minimize involuntary resettlement effects arising out of land acquisition. However, NWSDB confirms that construction of elevated water reservoirs in Hambantota, water treatment plant, tower sites and caretaker quarters in Muttur will require additional privately-owned land. NWSDB prepared this plan to show how they intend to mitigate the involuntary resettlement effects to people in Hambatota and Muttur areas.

Unnichchai Tank Augmentation - Draft Compensation Plan [ PDF: 756kb | 10 pages ].

The Water Supply Scheme for Greater Batticaloa will require raising the Unnichchai Tank to increase raw water availability for domestic consumption. Fishermen, farmers and wage laborers in the Unnichchai area might not be able to fish and will not have water for one Yala season. Although engineering solutions to avoid disrupting irrigation are still being explored, NWSDB prepared this draft compensation plan in the event that the people are affected by the tank augmentation.
