Central Asia Customs Cooperation Meeting

Post Workshop Statement

The Central Asia Customs Cooperation Meeting was held on 30-31 January 2002 in Manila, Philippines, with participants from the People's Republic of China (PRC), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and from Azerbaijan and Mongolia as observers.

The Meeting, was held at the expert level, and provided a forum for the participating countries to discuss and exchange experiences in customs modernization in the context of regional economic cooperation. In particular, it presented an opportunity to discuss the role of enhanced customs cooperation in achieving improvements in trade facilitation.

Objectives

The twofold objectives of the meeting were:

  • finalizing ADB's Sector Study, with a focus on identifying priority areas for cooperation
  • discussing the proposal for a cooperation mechanism.

Expected Output

The output of the meeting was a summary of discussions that contained recommendations on:

  • priority areas for future cooperation among customs
  • the establishment of a cooperation mechanism

Target Participants

  • Two senior customs officials from each of the governments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the People's Republic of China
  • Observers from Azerbaijan and Mongolia
  • Senior officials of ADB
