World Water Day was first celebrated in 1993, following recommendations of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. A resolution of the United Nations General Assembly designated March 22 of each year as World Water Day, and member states are invited to devote World Water Day to implement the UN recommendations and set up concrete activities on water and sanitation.
This year’s World Water Day’s theme is “Sanitation Matters!” ADB’s celebration begins early on 11 March with a forum featuring the Philippines’ Marikina City, which has won over 150 local and international awards and recognitions in the past 15 years, including the “Healthiest and Most Livable City in the Asia-Pacific” from the World Health Organization. The city also belongs to the “Global 500 Roll Of Honour” of the United Nations Environment Programme.
Mayor Marides Fernando will speak about the environmental sanitation program that helped transform Marikina into one of the healthiest and most livable cities in the Asia-Pacific region.
