Annual Meeting

ADB President Kuroda Opens 40th Annual Meeting with Vision of Prosperity Shared by All
The vision of abundant opportunity and widely shared prosperity in Asia and the Pacific is achievable, ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda told the official opening of the 40th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors in Kyoto in May. Also at the Annual Meeting, the Governors' Seminar on "Facing Asia's Future" discussed the recent report of an Eminent Persons Group convened by President Kuroda to advise on future trends and challenges facing the region and ADB's long-term role in addressing them. Knowledge Sharing and Advisory Services

Infrastructure Investment Advisory Assistance
In the first half of 2007, the Thailand Resident Mission (TRM) managed the project on Infrastructure Investment Advisory Assistance (Phase II), which is designed to support the Government in addressing policy, institutional, financial, and technical issues associated with plans to expand and integrate the rail mass rapid transit (MRT) in central Bangkok. Support to Implement Capital Market Development Master Plan
ADB will support the Ministry of Finance in implementing the Capital Market Development Master Plan. Read more.


Capacity Building for NEDA
ADB and the Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (NEDA) have started implementing the capacity building project for NEDA in March. Read the report [ PDF: 65kb | 14 pages ].


Subregional Development Plan for the Tsunami-Affected Andaman Region
Following the tsunami on 26 December 2004 that devastated Thailand's Andaman coast, killed more than 5,000 people, and rendered 58,000 inhabitants homeless, the Government of Thailand requested support from ADB in preparing the Subregional Development Plan (SRDP) for three of the most affected provinces: Krabi, Phang Nga, and Phuket. ADB is giving technical support to Thailand on Pension System Design.

Implementation of commercial financing for LGUs continued in the first half of 2007.

Economic and Sector Analysis

Southeast Asia's Growth to Ease in 2007—Asian Development Outlook
Economic growth in Southeast Asia is projected to slow a little to 5.6% in 2007, due mainly to a softening in some major export markets, according to the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2007 launched by ADB in late March.


Study on Leveraging Thailand's Investment in Urban Mass Rail Transit (MRT) to Develop a Competitive Export Capacity
ADB, through TRM, has commissioned a study to find out how planned large investments on MRT systems in Thailand could provide an opportunity for developing export capabilities of Thailand-based enterprises and increasing their niche in the global MRT industry.


Safeguard Policy Review
Early this year, ADB and the World Bank initiated a joint review of Thailand's environmental and resettlement safeguard policies, focusing on the transport sector.

GMS Environment Operations Center Celebrates First Anniversary
The GMS Environment Operations Center (EOC) celebrated its first year anniversary with a reception for government officials, development partners, and implementing agencies at the ADB Thailand Resident Mission in Bangkok, Thailand on 26 April.


Transport and Electricity-Energy Infrastructure Conferences
ADB co-hosted two major infrastructure conferences.


ADB Introduces New Financial Products
TRM, in cooperation with Ministry of Finance, conducted ADB's Financial Products Seminar in January.

ADB Management Visit

Vice President Pholsena on Asian Currency Note Program
Then ADB Vice President (Finance and Administration) Khempheng Pholsena paid a courtesy visit in January to M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and discussed ADB's Asian Currency Note Program. Jean-Pierre Verbiest, Country Director, TRM and senior officials from Ministry of Finance also attended the meeting.


Vice President Greenwood on ADB Operations in Thailand
ADB Vice President (Operations 2) C. Lawrence Greenwood Jr. met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry, Deputy Finance Minister, and Bank of Thailand Governor during his official visit to Thailand in February. The discussions focused on ADB operations in Thailand, country partnership strategy between Thailand and ADB, and GMS Cooperation.


Director General Thapan on Country Partnership Strategy
Arjun Thapan, Director General, ADB Southeast Asia Department, met with Thailand's Deputy Finance Minister Sommai Phasee and high-level officials at the Ministry of Finance in February to discuss the country partnership strategy (CPS) between Thailand and ADB. The Ministry has agreed and welcomed the new CPS, which will identify the core strategic areas of cooperation with ADB over the next 5 years.
