Deputy Resident Director, European Representative Office

Sophia Ho assumed the position of Deputy Resident Director, European Representative Office of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), in December 2005.

As Deputy Resident Director, Ms. Ho is responsible for supporting the implementation of the media and public relations strategies and programs of the Manila-based multilateral bank in ADB's 17 European member countries. The European Representative Office oversees a wide range of activities including external events, media relations, and public relations outreach to government and nongovernment communities. A key priority is to support ADB's overarching mandate of reducing poverty in the Asian and Pacific Region, which is home to two thirds of the world's poor.

Ms. Ho, born in Hong Kong, China, has more than 13 years experience in development operations including project and program formulation and implementation. She has extensive field experience in South Asia and the Pacific working together with the government and nongovernment stakeholders to formulate and implement country strategy and programs in meeting the country's development needs. Her country responsibilities in the past years included Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Fiji Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Cooks Islands, and Tuvalu. Ms. Ho was also instrumental in initiating ADB's South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Program including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal. Her last appointment was Deputy Regional Director of ADB's South Pacific Subregional Office in Suva, Fiji Islands.

An economist by profession, Ms. Ho holds a doctorate in Economics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, United States.
