Title: Economist 
Department/Division: Economic Research Department (ERD) / Macroeconomics and Finance Research Division (ERMF) 

1. IMMEDIATE REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The position reports to:
Assistant Chief Economist, ERMF

The following staff positions report to the Economist: National Officers and Administrative Staff

2. JOB PURPOSE:

Conduct economic research and provide support for country economic analysis to strengthen the analytical base for ADB’s strategic policy and operational agenda as well as support the policy agenda of ADB’s member countries in enhancing growth and addressing poverty. Contribute to the preparation and dissemination of research outputs and publications. Work with broad policies and objectives, working directly with clients, with supervision for critical tasks.

3. EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
  1. Economic Research Work
  • Conduct research on issues related to macroeconomic development, economic growth, income distribution and employment creation in developing Asia.
  • Provide support for country economic analyses.
  • Contribute to the preparation of the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) and the ADO Update.
  • Carry out independent work and produce high quality research papers regularly.
  • Provide support to Management through preparation of briefing notes, speeches and operational research papers.
  1. Knowledge Management
  • Participate in research dissemination, networking, and capacity-building activities with other institutions.
  1. Staff Supervision
  • Provide leadership and support to reporting staff.
  • Supervise the performance of reporting staff, providing clear direction and regular monitoring and feedback on performance.
  • Ensure the on-going learning and development of reporting staff.

6. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
A university degree in Economics or related fields; preferably at post-graduate level or its equivalent.

7. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Suitability to undertake the responsibilities mentioned above at the required level
  • At least 8 years of relevant professional experience with proven publications records in economic research related to development or poverty issues, or other related area
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • International experience working in several countries

8. IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS:

Established in 1966 and headquartered in Manila, Philippines, ADB's multicultural staff come from over 50 member countries. ADB offers an internationally competitive salary paid in US dollars. Salaries and benefits are generally free of tax except for citizens of some countries, primarily the USA and the Philippines, whose incomes are taxed by their respective governments. While the position advertised is for the ADB Headquarters in Manila, Philippines, ADB staff must be prepared to serve in any location outside its Headquarters at the discretion of Management.
