| Tourism | TOU002: The Mekong World Tourism River Corridor - An Endless Stream of Tourism Cooperation PROFILE
The project involves linking six recommended priority tourism zones into a single product concept by: (i) developing secondary and feeder roads between the major tourism zones as well as river-based infrastructure such as riverbank development, passenger jetties, river training, navigation and safety; (ii) establishing small-scale infrastructure water supply, electricity, sanitation, markets, landscape beautification, waste management, etc. in cities, towns, villages; (iii) provision of efficient and modern border facilities in areas outside the six priority tourism zones; (iv) developing basic visitor infrastructure including rest areas and toilets, signage and interpretation, information facilities, health and safety facilities; and (v) human resource development, marketing and capacity building studies and implementation activities.

| Tourism | TOU003: Laos-Vietnam Cross-Border Community-Based Tourism Zone PROFILE
The project aims to preserve the caves at Vienxay, Lao PDR, which have significant tourism potential and constitute the Province?s most important tourism resource. The project seeks to: (1) upgrade the airstrip at Xam Nua to allow entry for larger aircraft and address landing problems associated with poor weather conditions; and (2) upgrade Road 1 between Vieng Kham (Luang Prabang Province) and Vieng Thong (Houaphanh Province). These improvements will improve access to the area, and complement efforts to further facilitate travel through the issuance of visas at the international border with Vietnam. These will provide access to the Hanoi tourism market (in excess of one million international visitors per year), just 2-3 hours from the border.

| Tourism | TOU004: Shangrila-Tengchong-Myitkyna Tourism Development Zone PROFILE
The project will involve: a study of the existing and likely future pattern of tourism that will develop as a result of ongoing plans for road and access development; review impact of tourism on the existing array of natural and cultural tourism resources, on the distribution of the benefits of tourism and its social impacts; and prepare strategies and action plans designed to bring about a more sustainable pattern of tourism development. In particular, the study would identify strategic tourism-related infrastructure projects aimed at protecting and conserving key natural and cultural tourism resources, safeguarding the environment against high levels of tourism growth experienced in key tourism centres, improving linkages between key staging areas and related tourist sites and villages with high levels of poverty, and improving environmental infrastructure in key staging towns and villages. The feasibility of priority tourism-related infrastructure projects would be evaluated and the basis of a loan program developed to finance implementation. The project would look at the possible transport links between China and Myanmar and routes i.e. road, rail, air with the old Burma Road as backbone.

| Tourism | TOU005: Guangxi PRC - Northeast Vietnam Borderlands Tourism Zone PROFILE
The zone contains . The project aims to assist in the Guangxi PRC-Northeast Viet Nam Borderlands Tourism Zone, which contains one of the most outstanding examples of subtopical karst landscapes in the world. The project will involve three components: (1) a study to prepare a plan for sustainable development and tourism management in the zone, to include identification of tourism-related infrastructure projects; (2) specification and feasibility studies on a program of tourism-related infrastructure in the zone; and (3) implementation of the tourism-related infrastructure program based on loan and other financing instruments.

| Tourism | TOU006: GMS Coastal and River Cruise Lines PROFILE
The project will involve both a TA study to establish the demand and supply for cruising in the GMS as well as the identification and implementation of a cruise ship infrastructure development program. The TA study will identify and evaluate the feasibility of up to 7 cruise ship terminal points, up to 14 smaller jetties giving access to key points for day visits, and related navigation works, and lay out a program of community preparation around these points. The project is expected to result in the production of investment memoranda designed to attract private sector investors to partner with the related GMS public sector institutions on the planning, financing, development and operation of the cruise ship infrastructure facilities.

The project will build upon strategic infrastructure development in the North South Corridor between Kunming and Bangkok by exploring how to manage and develop the tourism potential of the area. Other initiatives would involve production of maps, standardization of tourism services, facilities, presentation and interpretation, marketing and promotion including operation of? caravan tours.The project would also involve development and implementation of a ?Cultural Diversity Lens? ? that can be applied by the heritage managers and local officials to assess the impact tourism will have or is having on the living cultures of the local ethnic groups as well as the tangible cultural heritage.The project is expected to include: (1) formulation of an integrated destination development and management plan; (2) infrastructure design and implementation with private sector, as appropriate; (3) specific program interventions on conservation and training, HRD, environment improvement, employment generation, expansion of SMEs and others; (4) support to relevant GMS programs; and (5) workshops, seminars and related stakeholder participation in proposed and programs.

| Tourism | TOU010: Tourism and Infrastructure Feasibility Study Along Coastal Route Of The Southern Economic Corridor PROFILE
The project will analyze the Bangkok-Sihannoukville-HCM/Delta sub corridor and explore the development of its tourism potential. The proposed road and this sub corridor route would open up the whole coastline. The infrastructure provision in this sub corridor is lagging but there are various plans for the upgrading of road, rail, port and air links, as well as the development of facilities to appreciate natural and cultural sites, development of road signage and site interpretative signs. | Tourism | TOU015: Human Resource Development and Capacity Building in the Greater Mekong Subregion (Target: Hospitality Skills Trainers in Vocational Institutions) PROFILE
The project aims to train a corps of master hospitality skills trainers in each GMS country who in turn, will train other trainers in their respective countries in a cascade effect. This strategy will address the need to train prospective employees and retrain the thousands of employees currently employed in hotels, guest houses, restaurants, and other tourist-oriented establishments. ASEAN countries, of which 5 GMS countries are members, are in the process of adopting common skills standards in hospitality. These standards will be used as a basis for the training. The project will adopt existing train-the-trainers programs in the region which are deemed to be successful; translate the training manuals into the GMS languages; develop teacher training kits and translate these to the GMS languages; digitize the training manuals (CD ROMs); and make them available on a web-based Knowledge Center which will be accessible to a wide audience in the GMS. The train the trainers programs for the master trainers will be conducted in English in a common center in one of the GMS countries but the echo or cascade programs will be conducted in each country in the national language to ensure that owners of the smaller lodging establishments and restaurants/F & B outlets will also have the opportunity to be trained as trainers.

| Tourism | TOU016: Human Resource Development and Capacity Building in the Greater Mekong Subregion (Target: Deans and Professors/Lecturers in Academic Institutions Offering Tourism and Hospitality Management Degree Programs) PROFILE
The project will: 1. Conduct organized study tours for deans and heads of tourism/hospitality faculties in the GMS to universities overseas with high standards of academic excellence; 2. Send young teachers overseas on scholarships to take up their Masters or PhD degrees; and 3. develop a customized training program for both old and young teachers to train them in- country, in their national language, on the latest trends in tourism and hospitality education. Visiting lecturers/professors from overseas will be asked to conduct these training programs, including Cambodians, Vietnamese, Lao people, and Chinese professors teaching overseas who speak the national language and fluent English.

The project aims to (i) develop a corps of middle level public officials in each of the GMS countries who are tourism specialists, especially in GMS tourism; (ii) exchange ideas and experiences in tourism in GMS/Asia, thus enriching the dialogue on tourism development and management. The project will involve (i) a training needs analysis (TNA) of middle level public officials whose work interface with tourism; (ii) development of customized training programs and teaching materials/case studies based on the TNA; (iii) development of teacher training kits or manuals; (iv) translation all materials into Lao, Khmer, Burmese, Vietnamese and Chinese; (v) digitize the training materials (CD ROMs), web-based); train the trainers (in English) on the use of new teaching materials; (vi) conduct the training programs in country in the GMS languages; (vii) cascade the training to other trainers in country; and (vii) evaluate the effectiveness of the program and adjust accordingly.

The project will address the negative social impacts of tourism development, including: (1) human trafficking; (2) commercial sex and sexual exploitation of children in tourism; and (3) HIV/AIDS, within the context of tourism. The project is expected to provide training and awareness-raising among all sectors linked with the tourism industry; development of community programs reaching into areas where the supply of commercial sex workers come; production of prevention and awareness raising materials which have the potential to reach a wide audience; initiation of a 2-year qualitative and quantitative research on the distribution of the sex industry linked with tourism; and a mapping component using GIS technology (modeled on UNESCO Bangkok?s current project documenting HIV/AIDS and sex work venues in Thailand).

| Tourism | TOU021: Preserving the Soul of the Ancestors: Protection of Traditional Living Cultures within the Framework of Tourism Development in the GMS PROFILE
The project will: (i) develop a regional ethnographic databank consisting of written, oral and visual materials that will not only document the unique cultural diversity of the GMS before it disappears, but also create an important knowledge base for developing informed and intelligent cultural tourism; (ii) advocate supporting local indigenous networks which aim to strengthen the voice of the local ethnic minorities (e.g. IKAP, the Indigenous Knowledge and Peoples Network on Capacity Building in Mainland Montane Southeast Asia based in Chiang Mai that already links the entire GMS region plus Sichuan and Guizhou in China, and can be called upon for training and conducting village workshops); (iii) assess and analyze various governmental and private strategies and/or approaches to ethnic tourism; (iv) evaluate ?on-the-ground? implementation of these strategies, and their impact on the ethnic minority populations; and (v) at the beginning of the project, set up a baseline survey and monitoring project at 12 sites in the 6 GMS countries in order to identify the socio-cultural indicators necessary for ensuring the sustainability and success of ?ethnic tourism?.

| Tourism | TOU022: Capacity Building for Heritage Managers to Protect and Manage Priority Heritage Sites for Tourism PROFILE
The project covers both short-term (5 years) and long-term (10-15 years) strategies. In the short-term, the project will incorporate a heritage management training unit within the subregional GMS HRD framework. A specialized training course and curriculum will be designed by experts to upgrade the skills and build the capacity of a core group of about 100 middle-level heritage managers and NTO professionals who specialize in cultural and nature tourism. Participants who successfully complete the course will be issued certification and will serve as primary trainers in their own countries. A sub-component of this training is training and certifying heritage guides. Although this training will be folded into the larger HRD project profile, this is a stand alone component and will also be certified. It is expected to train an initial corps of 50 guides at the GMS level. The long-term strategy involves strengthening existing institutions in each of the countries to provide a degree-level or certificate heritage management training in order to produce the next generation of heritage manager professionals. | Tourism | TOU023: Creating Ecological Corridors: Setting Up Trans-border Complementarity to Strengthen Tourism Management in and Around Protected Areas PROFILE
The project will: 1) Assess the current status of, and threats to, biodiversity conservation in the specified protected areas (PAs); 2) Identify suitable sites for developing and promoting ecotourism in and around target PAs and develop a tourism activity zoning system; 3) Identify local entrepreneurs and business people interested to develop ecolodges in the target PAs; 4) Undertake study tours to provide key stakeholders with first hand experience of best practice examples of ecolodges and ecotourism products and services in and around PAs; 5) Design and implement (through a TA initiative) an ongoing mentoring programme to selected entrepreneurs to provide them with the range of skills for planning and managing successful ecolodge businesses; 6) Provide or identify sources for soft-loans that are geared towards the needs of ?triple bottom-line? ecolodges; 7) Develop a series of small infrastructure projects for access to sites of high tourism potential (feeder roads) and for electrification, and visitor centres for tourist information and interpretation; 8) Review legal and regulatory mechanisms relating to tourism and PA management; 9) Assess the capacity building requirements of PA management units and local communities for the effective implementation of ecotourism and biodiversity conservation rules and regulations; 10) Create and provide standardized training packages for protected area management units and local communities on both sides of the border; 11) Identify candidates for training as local guides and, using training materials and trainers already available, implement a series of guide-training programmes; 12) Organize workshops for protected area managers and representatives from local communities and key agencies from both sides of the border to meet and exchange management experiences, problems and successes.

The project will develop a new tourism circuit to take visitors to ancient sites of monumental religious architecture distributed throughout 5 of the 6 GMS countries (Cambodia, Thailand, Lao PDR, Vietnam and Myanmar) that will provide accurate, up to date and expanded knowledge of and understanding about the complex cultural heritage of the civilizations among these GMS countries. It will cover: 1. Project Preparation including participatory workshops among the heritage managers and NTOs, community mobilization, partnership building, project team building and developing the detailed project implementation action plan; 2. Creation of cooperative research networks; 3. Survey and assessment of the sites; 4. Site planning including development planning, product diversification, environmental infrastructure (drainage, water supply, waste management, local roads, parking), support to physical conservation and training, training of local heritage guides, visitor centres; creation of shared information materials, employment creation and support to SMEs; 5. Recommendations and Final Implementation Plan; 6. Evaluation; Base line monitoring and impact analysis. The project, in addition to promoting a new product, will address the needs of collaborative cross-border research, promote quality and standard heritage management at all the participating sites, assist conservation and visitor management, and alleviate environmental degradation at the sites.

This project will pilot pro-poor tourism initiatives including improving economic linkages between the tourism industry and tourism suppliers in poverty areas. It will also support increasing pro-poor tourism input into policy, planning, HRD, marketing and managing impacts and infrastructure development. The project will consist of the following components: Part A will cover broadening pro-poor tourism initiatives (facilitate sustainable development and socio-economic growth through systematic support and development in Seven Tourism Zones; and Part B will address mainstreaming pro-poor tourism initiatives (support increasing pro-poor tourism input into policy, planning, HRD, marketing & managing impacts and infrastructure development, and sharing good practices at the National level).
