The project includes the development, construction and operation of the 1,070 megawatt (MW) trans-basin diversion power plant on the Nam Theun River, which includes a 450 sq. kilometer reservoir on the Nakai plateau formed by a 39-meter high dam. The project will export 5,354 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity to Thailand and provide revenue to Lao PDR through taxes, royalties and dividends, while supplying 200-300 GWh to local consumers. The loan was approved in April 2005. ADB funded PPTA (US$1.7 M) prepared cumulative impact assessment study (CIA), designed mitigation program and undertook further economic and financial analysis.
