Flood Control and Water Resource Management

Objective

Flood management and mitigation (FMM) is a flagship initiative under the GMS Strategic Framework endorsed during the 10th GMS Ministerial Meeting held in Yangon, Myanmar in November 2001. Its overall goal is to prevent, minimize, or mitigate people's suffering and economic losses due to floods while preserving the environmental and economic benefits of floods.

Participating Countries

Cambodia and Viet Nam for loan projects; four Lower Mekong Basin GMS countries for technical assistance.

Programs and Projects

Under the flagship initiative, integrated structural and flood-proofing measures are the largest in terms of cost. The projects consist of both project preparatory technical assistance (PPTA) and investment in water resource development - already included in ADB country strategy programs (CSPs) for Viet Nam and Cambodia.
