GMS Tourism Development

Objectives

The GMS Tourism Development flagship initiative aims to: (i) promote and strengthen subregional cooperation and tourism development in the GMS countries, and (ii) promote increased tourism in the GMS in order to augment earnings, reduce poverty, mitigate environmental degradation from unplanned and unsustainable development, and develop human resources in the GMS.

Participating Countries

All six Cambodia, People's Republic of China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam

Programs and Projects

Seven programs representing the key issues that need to be addressed to sustain rapid growth of tourism in the subregion and ensure its sustainable development will be pursued under the GMS Tourism Development flagship initiative. These include:

  1. promoting the subregion as a single tourism destination,
  2. developing tourism-related infrastructure,
  3. improving human resources in the tourism sector,
  4. improving standards of management of natural and cultural resources,
  5. promoting pro-poor community-based sustainable tourism,
  6. encouraging private sector participation in the GMS tourism sector, and
  7. facilitating the movement of tourists to and within the GMS.
