Siem Reap Airport Project (Loan 1503)

Overview

In December 1996, ADB approved a loan of $15 million to Cambodia from the Bank's Special Fund resources for the Siem Reap Airport Project -- loan 1503.

The immediate objective of the project is to provide the requisite infrastructure and improve the operational capacity of Siem Reap Airport to cater for the expected increase in tourists visiting the Angkor Wat complex. The objective will be achieved by:

  • upgrading the airport runway, buildings and equipment,
  • improving airport safety to comply with ICAO standards, and
  • strengthening the institutional capacity of the airport operations.

This will ensure safe and reliable all-weather air transport operations. The project will further contribute to a more balanced development of the transport sector as a whole, provide a reliable transport link between the capital city, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap in a relatively short time and remove infrastructure constraints on the growth of domestic air services. Policy and institutional strengthening measures associated with the project will further aim at ensuring sustainability of the proposed and other investments in the sector.

The project scope consists of the following main components:

  • civil works for aerodome, operational buildings, and airport terminal,
  • equipment for air traffic services, aeronautical communications, and navigational aids, and
  • consultant services to assist in preconstruction activities (preparation of designs, tender documents, bid evaluation), project management, and construction supervision.
