Gender Thematic RETAs

Strengthening the Role of Labor Standards in Selected Developing Member Countries, 1999

To ensure that the new century achieves economic and social progress, securing access to employment under acceptable and decent conditions is essential. From a gender perspective, discrimination against woman in employment and occupation is widespread in the region. This is a violation of one of the four international Core Labor Standards, the principle of non-discrimination. While it is indisputable that women's economic contribution is significant for economic growth and well-being of the family, there are persistent gender gaps in employment, earnings and benefits.

In collaboration with the International Labour Office (ILO), the gender components of the project will

  • collect and analyze data on the comparative situation of men and women in the labor market
  • review national legislation relevant to women's employment and position in the labor market
  • prepare country reports (Bangladesh, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand) and a regional report
  • prepare strategies and recommendations for the regional framework and action plan

The RETA will also develop a Handbook on how to address gender discrimination in employment and occupation, including guidelines, checklists and good practice
