HIV and AIDS are linked in a complex manner to economic development and poverty. The social and economic effects of AIDS related illnesses and deaths are felt most in households living close to or below the poverty line. Preventing HIV infections now is the most effective way to curb the HIV epidemic and avoid social and economic costs of treating HIV and AIDS related illnesses.

Customizing Education and Behavior Change Activities for HIV Prevention in the Road Construction SettingImproved transportation infrastructure and the emergence of transport and economic corridors in the Greater Mekong Subregion brings with it increased vulnerability to HIV infection. There is a need for innovative information, education and communication (IEC), as well as behavior change communication (BCC) tools and strategic approaches to reach the construction workforce and the surrounding communities, and although there are many HIV prevention IEC/BCC tools, only some are specifically tailored to road construction and transport corridor settings.
