Fighting HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific

The Cooperation Fund for Fighting HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific is funded by the Government of Sweden and will finance the regional Technical Assistance (RETA) for Fighting HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific [ PDF: 93kb | 18 pages ]. The RETA will help developing member countries (DMCs) achieve the sixth Millennium Development Goal, target 7: "halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS"in Asia and the Pacific by 2015. The outcome is to develop and implement a more effective and evidence-based response to the AIDS epidemic at the country and regional levels.

An HIV/AIDS Unit has been established in the Regional and Sustainable Development Division (RSDD) under the supervision of Dr. Jacques Jeugmans (Practice Leader - Health, RSGS). The unit is responsible for the implementation of the ADB Strategic Direction Paper on HIV/AIDS, for supporting and coordinating ADB HIV/AIDS activities, and for providing guidance on policy and strategic issues to strengthen the impact of ADB's response to the AIDS epidemic.

Under the RETA, there are twelve (12) subprojects that will be administered by the Regional Departments. Consolidating the outputs from subprojects, the RETA has four major outputs:

  1. knowledge products, such as issue papers and technical notes
  2. review of socially inclusive and community-driven HIV/AIDS interventions, presenting practical lessons learned and good practices from TA-funded subprojects
  3. evidence-based guidelines and tools for effective HIV/AIDS prevention and care
  4. HIV/AIDS training program and modules for ADB staff
