Asian Development Outlook 2008

Curbing Inflation a Key to Avoiding Downdraft

Though largely driven by domestic demand, the country is nevertheless vulnerable to the worsening global economic environment. Avoiding a deep downdraft in the next 2 years will primarily be shaped by the outcomes of three counteracting forces: keeping food price inflation moderate, lowering interest rates to sustain high levels of investment, and containing the fiscal deficit.
