Anthony Ranjit Bevis Amerasinghe, Sri Lanka

Mr. Anthony Ranjit Bevis Amerasinghe, LLB Litt., PhD, LL.D. received his legal education at the University of Ceylon, the Ceylon Law College and Queen's College, Oxford. He was a Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. He was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka from 1988 to 2001. He was Chairman of the Law Commission from 1994 and in 1999 he was reappointed for a further term of five years. From 1983 to 1988, he was the Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Secretary-General of the UNESCO National Commission. He is a member of the Constitutional Council.

He has served in numerous international, regional and national committees. In a multi-faceted career covering a wide range of subjects including international law, insurance, risk-management, intellectual property, environmental law and public corporations, he has served with distinction as an "expert" at the highest levels in African, Middle Eastern, Asian and South Pacific countries, appointed by various government, intergovernmental and international agencies including the Asian African Legal Consultative Committee, the International Legal Centre of New York, the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Cooperation, the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the United Nations Development Programme. He was Secretary General of the SACEP-UNEP-NORAD Regional Symposium on the Role of the Judiciary in Sustainable Development, and is a member of the UNEP expert panel on the preparation of the handbook on environmental law. He is the author of 16 books and numerous papers.
