2004 Summer Internship Program

ADB is a multilateral development finance institution dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and the Pacific. Established in 1966, we are now owned by 63 member countries, mostly from the region. Our headquarters are in Manila, with 22 other offices around the world. Find out more about ADB.

This site provides students and academic institutions information about the availability of internships at ADB during the summer of 2004 - it is not a solicitation for applicants.

Applications are considered only for the specific internship positions that ADB makes available each summer, usually for 10 students. If an academic institution is interested in participating, information regarding internship projects will be sent to those that have signified interest by 30 January 2004. We regret that we cannot accept replies after this date.

Internship Program Details

What does the intern gain?

  • work in a major international development organization with a multicultural environment
  • gain a deeper understanding of development finance and the impact of ADB
  • learn from experienced professionals
  • interact with other interns
  • present internship outputs in a public forum at ADB

Who Can Be an Intern?

Applicants must be

  • enrolled for the 2003-2004 and/or 2004-2005 academic years in a master's- or PhD-level program at an institution recognized for its excellence in fields directly related to ADB's diverse work, which covers social infrastructure, agriculture and natural resources, energy, finance, industry, transport, communications, and economics
  • enrolled in a school participating with ADB
  • a national of ADB's member countries

What Does ADB Provide?

  • budget class round-trip airfare from the intern's institution or country of residence to location of internship (ADB headquarters or country/representative office)
  • suitable accommodation
  • a daily stipend to cover cost of food, laundry, and local transportation
  • a cash bonus for those who complete the program successfully
  • a certificate of completion to successful participants

Interns must provide their own insurance.

(Notes: Applicants should not expect the internship to lead to immediate employment with ADB. Any extension in the internship period will be an exception and justified on the grounds of work requirements by the hosting department. Close relatives of ADB employees are not eligible for the program.)

The Process

  1. The university internship coordinator/contact registers the institution by 30 January 2004. We regret that we cannot accept replies after this date.

  2. ADB sends internship project topics or terms of reference for 2004 (usually 10) to the coordinator by end-February 2004. The coordinator distributes these to interested, qualified students.

  3. Students prepare an application for one project only. The institution screens all applications.

  4. The institution nominates only the top three applicants to ADB. Proof of nationality and continuing enrollment must accompany the application. Interns must be fluent in English and have basic computing skills. Applications sent by individuals will not be considered.

  5. ADB evaluates all applications received. Criteria for selection are academic qualification, relevant experience, and required skills for the specific internship project. ADB also considers institutional representation, and gender and nationality balance in the process.

  6. The successful candidates receive details upon confirming their participation.
