For Students
  1. Why does Asian Development Bank offer internship program?

    ADB as a learning organization values knowledge exchanges with external partners including students with expertise pertinent to ADB’s business.

  2. What is the duration of the internship?

    The duration should be a minimum of eight (8) weeks (56 days) and a maximum of 26 weeks or six (6) months for one internship assignment.

  3. What is the timing of the internship?

    The program is offered twice a year. Within these time frames, a supervisor and an intern will determine a mutually agreeable timing.
    (i) June-December: The application period is February –March each year.
    (ii) January-March: The application period is October-November each year.

  4. Can students apply directly to ADB?

    No. Students must apply through their academic institutions’ internship coordinators.

  5. Can students directly inquire from ADB?

    Yes. Students may send their inquiries to adbintern@adb.org.

  6. My school is not registered. What shall I do?

    You can request your faculty members or internship coordinator at career development office at your school to consider registering online.

  7. Is there an internship opportunity in ADB for undergraduate students?

    ADB has no programs for undergraduate students. The internship program accommodates only Masteral or PhD level students.

  8. What is the procedure for applying for ADB internships?

    ADB will announce the assignments on the web and to the registered academic institutions. Candidates can apply following the procedure.

  9. When is the deadline for submission of application?

    Students must contact their internship coordinators for the deadline to submit their applications.

  10. Is there an age limit for applying for ADB internship?

    There is no age limit.

  11. Can I apply for an ADB internship even if I am not a national of any of its member countries but enrolled in a school in one of the ADB member countries?

    No. Candidates have to be nationals of ADB member countries.

  12. Can I apply for internship if I have a relative in ADB?

    No. ADB does not accept applications from close relatives of ADB staff as follows:

    Father Granddaughter Stepsister Sister-in-law

  13. I am a spouse of an ADB staff. Can I apply?

    Yes, if he/she is an eligible student.

  14. Do I get paid for ADB’s internships?

    Stipend is provided to all interns according to the location of internships up to 56 calendar days. Interns may choose to continue to work beyond 56 calendar days, but without stipend.

  15. What are the expenses am I expected to pay?

    Accommodation, transportation, and food. You also have to purchase comprehensive insurance coverage for the entire period of internship prior to departure.

  16. What are the other benefits am I eligible as an intern?

    1. access to a workstation with computer and phone, email on Lotus Notes, official documents and public databases, and office supplies for official use;
    2. access to ADB Library, (Material) and Learning Resource Center;
    3. learning sessions designed for interns. Participation in in-house learning and development programs at discretion of the supervisor and HR;
    4. use of headquarter services (commercial banks, communication center, laundry, etc);
    5. membership in the clubs of ADB upon payment of membership fees, and participation in departmental recreational gatherings;
    6. access to medical consultation at ADB clinic; and
    7. access to cafeteria and executive dining rooms.

  17. I am interested in internships at one of the Resident Missions, what shall I do?

    Assignments are in general at ADB’s headquarters in Manila, the Philippines, unless specified. As for Resident Mission based internship that targets local students enrolled in local schools, we announce through local media. The application process is the same.

  18. How do I know if I am selected?

    We will inform you directly with the Terms and Conditions, followed by Terms of Reference and Work Plan. We do not send any notice if you are not selected due to the high volume of applications we receive.

  19. Do I get to travel during my internship assignment?

    As a general rule, interns are not expected to travel during the internship assignment.

  20. What are the working hours?

    Regular work schedule is 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with one hour lunch break. Any other preferred schedule should be discussed with supervisors.

  21. Can a past ADB intern apply for another internship with ADB?

    Past interns are ineligible to apply for another internship with ADB.

  22. Can I get an employment with ADB after completing the internship?

    Completing an internship does not automatically qualify for an employment with ADB.

  23. What happens if I do not complete the internship requirements?

    Individuals who did not complete the internship requirements will not be eligible for future internship opportunities with ADB.

For Institutions
  1. How can an academic institution register with ADB?

    The academic institution’s internship coordinator registers online.

  2. When is the deadline for an academic institution to register?

    There is no deadline. Academic institutions can register any time of the year

  3. Why do you have the school registration system?

    To ensure that the registered academic institutions meet the eligibility criteria and agree with the ADB process.

  4. What is the role of an internship coordinator as a focal person?

    Internship coordinators are responsible for:
    1. ensuring selection criteria and process outlined by ADB;
    2. nominating or identifying applicants;
    3. supporting application process; and
    4. supervising interns, if required; in case the focal person is a faculty member, he/she may choose to be actively involved in guiding the intern.

  5. Can an intern coordinator apply for an internship?

    Internship coordinators should be University’s staff member and not students. Therefore, Internship Coordinators are ineligible to apply for internship.

  6. Can a professor or a member of the academe participate in the ADB internship program?

    The ADB internship program is for Masteral or PhD level students. Members of the academe may participate in ADB’s research fellowship program. Please send an email to adbintern@adb.org for details.
