Asian Development Outlook 2008

Economic Pace to Moderate

Mining and hydropower kept the economy growing at a rapid rate last year and the outlook is for further growth at a more moderate pace of 8% in 2008–2009. Robust economic growth expected in neighboring trading partners such as the People’s Republic of China and Thailand should support demand for Lao PDR’s main exports. Lao PDR and ADB
The Lao PDR joined the ADB at its founding in 1966 and, as of end-December 2007, approved loans to the country totaled almost $1.23 billion, with technical assistance projects amounting to $108.84 million. ADB has extended development assistance since 1968 and continues to remain the largest multilateral financier to the country.
