Helping to Achieve Better Results through Regional Cooperation

Regional cooperation is a core component of ADB's strategy for reducing poverty in the Asia and Pacific region. This reflects the need to support the development of ADB's developing member countries through cooperation to

  • provide wider development options through greater access to resources and markets
  • address shared problems that stretch across borders
  • take advantage of opportunities for sharing knowledge and information.

Regional cooperation includes addressing problems associated with regional public goods which at the same time correspond to some of the MDGs. Examples of these are environmental issues such as shared watershed management or polution from forest fires, and health-related issues such as transmission of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

ADB has supported regional cooperation programs in various thematic and sector areas which directly and indirectly support the MDGs. These include programs in trade, education, governance and capacity building, environment, gender and development, water, health, and microfinance.
