Headwinds and Risks for Maldives

High global commodity prices caused a spike in inflation and widened the current account deficit in 2008, and the global economic slowdown hit tourist arrivals. These developments added to the pressures induced by an overly expansive post-2004 fiscal policy. The newly elected president plans to introduce structural reforms to bring down the large domestic and external imbalances. The bleak global economic outlook presents substantial headwinds and risks.

The Maldives has received public sector lending of $101.31 million for 17 loans and $19.53 million for 56 technical assistance (TA) activities since joining ADB in 1978.
