ADB President Remembers Asian Tsunami Victims - One Year On

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda pays tribute to the victims of the tsunami.

One year ago, a magnitude 9 earthquake triggered a tsunami that changed forever the lives and landscapes of vast stretches of Asia.

As time passes, it is important that we do not forget the historic events that took place on 26 December 2004. Nearly 300,000 people were killed and more than 1.5 million were displaced in a disaster of unprecedented proportions.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the families who have been affected by these events and those who are still struggling to cope with their losses today.

ADB has been working closely with member governments to assist in the rebuilding of those areas devastated by the tsunami. Given the scale of devastation, reconstruction will take time and planning has to be sound. We share the vision of a reconstruction effort that endeavors to build communities back to a stronger position than they were before the disaster.

The last year has seen a series of disasters around the world and throughout Asia. The Asian Development Bank stands ready to assist whenever it can.
