ADB Names Special Advisor on Clean Energy and Environment

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Reflecting the increasing importance of energy and environment on development in the Asia and Pacific region, ADB has appointed effective immediately Bindu Lohani as special advisor to its President on Clean Energy and Environment.

In his new role, Mr. Lohani, who will concurrently continue to serve as Director General and Chief Compliance Officer of ADB's Regional and Sustainable Development Department, will advise on strategy and policy as well as operational matters concerning ADB initiatives on energy and environment.

Since 1992, ADB has been supporting its developing member countries in coping with potential changes in climate through several technical assistance projects. ADB also stimulates the use of clean energy technologies especially in rural areas. Special attention is paid to relating this with aspects of livelihood improvement and poverty reduction.

ADB's technical assistance activities related to climate change, renewable energy and energy efficiency are presently carried out under the interdepartmental program called Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Climate Change abbreviated to REACH.

ADB also established a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Facillity in August 2003. Following up on this, ADB also plans to launch during 2006 a special cofinancing vehicle to boost investment in new Clean CDM projects in Asia and the Pacific.

Under the Kyoto Protocol, there is expected to be greater focus on CDM, demand side management through enhanced energy efficiency, promoting energy supply from non- and low-carbon sources as well as renewable and clean energy.
