Finalists Gather for Developing Asia Journalism Awards
MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Sixteen finalists from 11 countries are gathering in Manila this week for the 2006 Developing Asia Journalism Awards. They were chosen from more than 250 entries submitted for the awards, which is in its third year, sponsored by the Tokyo-based ADB Institute and ADB, headquartered in Manila. Among the finalists are four from the last two years. The finalists for DAJA 2006 are (in alphabetical order). Deepa Anappara (India) Ma. Theresa Bacalla (Philippines) Lourdes Estella Simbulan Estella (Philippines) Shahid Husain (Pakistan) Supara Janchitfah (Thailand) Aida Kasymalieva (Kyrgyz Republic) Heni Kurniasih (Indonesia) Gu Lin (PRC) Dilshath Banu Noordeen (Sri Lanka) Bin Ouyang (PRC) Samisoni Pareti (Fiji) Keshab Poudel (Nepal) Sam Rith (Cambodia) Saumya Roy (India) Tahira Sawar (Pakistan) Menon Suchitra (India) The awards are given to print journalists from Asia's developing countries in recognition of excellence in reporting on development issues. Cash prizes and trophies are awarded in four categories, plus there are four special prizes, topped by the Development Journalist of the Year. The winners are chosen by a panel of three judges. Finalists are invited to a two-day all expenses paid program culminating in an awards ceremony that takes place on Wednesday at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel, Ortigas, Manila.
