Norway Contributes Additional Nkr15 Million to ADB's Poverty and Environment Fund
MANILA, PHILIPPINES - The Government of Norway has agreed to make another contribution of Nkr15 million (about US$2.4 million equivalent) to ADB's Poverty and Environment Fund. The Poverty and Environment Fund was established in July 2003 with an initial contribution of about $3.6 million equivalent from Norway and Sweden. “The additional grant funds are much needed and will further support environmental management as a strategic priority of ADB,” says Werner Liepach, Principal Director of ADB's Office of Cofinancing Operations. The PEF is a multi-donor umbrella facility that promotes the mainstreaming of environment objectives in ADB operations and poverty reduction strategies, plans, programs, and projects of its developing member countries. The PEF focuses on protection, conservation, and sustainable use of natural resources and ecosystem services; reduction of air and water pollution; and reduction of vulnerability to natural hazards and disaster prevention. Norway’s additional contribution to the PEF will finance environment-related technical assistance and other activities, including a second phase of the Poverty and Environment Program. This aims to accelerate learning about poverty-environment linkages and effective approaches for poverty reduction through environmental improvement. About ADB |
