Funding Resources for NGOs: Strengthening Financial Management and Fundraising Capacity


Successful fundraising requires both a strong financial management system to design a realistic budget as well as a solid fundraising plan. This page contains links to external websites with tools for both financial management and fundraising for civil society organizations. ADB is not responsible for the content of these sites.

Civicus

CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is an international alliance established in 1993 to nurture the foundation, growth and protection of citizen action throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens' freedom of association are threatened. CIVICUS has compiled a large collection of civil society capacity building toolkits and resources. All toolkits are available free of charge.

Idealist

Idealist is a project of Action Without Borders, a nonprofit organization founded in 1995 with offices in the United States and Argentina. Idealist is an interactive site where people and organizations can exchange resources and ideas, locate opportunities and supporters, and take steps toward building a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives. Idealist has large resource centers for non-profit organizations in English, French and Spanish.

Management Accounting for Non Governmental Organizations (Mango)

Mango helps NGOs to work more effectively by strengthening their financial management and raising their professional standards. Mango's tools are field tested, practical and easy to understand. They are written in plain English, avoiding jargon. They aim to de-mystify financial management and help build confidence as well as skills. Mango's Guide to Financial Management for NGOs provides high quality resources and is available free to help NGO staff and trustees get to grips with financial management in practice.

Networklearning

Networklearning has many aims, including linking people to resources, useful organizations, other users, websites and materials and to make top quality manuals, field books, training courses and other information materials easily available to groups who need them. The organization has put together A Guide to Fundraising to improve capacity of CSOs in the South to raise funds. Their publication, How to Build a Good Small NGO, helps build the capacity of CSOs in project planning and financial management.

NGO Manager

NGO Manager aspires to provide a comprehensive range of nonprofit management services to managers of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including training courses and consultancy, and research on how to improve management capacity building. The NGO Manager website provides a selection of the best management tools and key articles which are available on the internet free of charge.

Oneworldtrust.org

The One World Trust is an independent think tank that conducts research, develops recommendations and advocates for reform to make policy and decision-making processes in global governance more accountable to the people they affect now and in the future, and to ensure that international laws are strengthened and applied equally to all. One World Trust has a collection of resources for anyone interested in learning more about practical measures to improve all aspects of accountability and their application.

Venture for Fund Raising aims to professionalize the practice of fund raising by providing training, consulting, research and public information assistance to people and organizations so that they can raise and give resources to fulfill their missions.
