Consolidating Efforts to Fight Poverty Message from President of ADB Mr. Tadao Chino
For more than three decades, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has worked in partnership with Nepal to promote economic and social development. Since ADB's operations began in Nepal in 1968, a total of US$2 billion has been provided to finance 99 development projects covering sectors such as social infrastructure, energy, transport and communications, and private sector development. ADB will continue to support the government in pursuing critically important policy and institutional reforms to improve sector efficiency and increase private sector participation in the economy.
ADB has dedicated itself to a clear and single-minded vision - an Asia and Pacific region free of poverty. To achieve this vision, ADB has identified poverty reduction as its overarching goal. ADB recognizes that the nature, causes, and consequences of poverty are diverse and each country is in the best position to find its own path to overcome these challenges. But a country can be freed from poverty only if all the development partners, civil society, nongovernmental and community based organizations, and donors make a concerted and sustained effort under the leadership of the government.
Our Resident Mission Office in Kathmandu helps strengthen ADB's country focus and its operational activities in Nepal. ADB will continue to work closely with Nepal, one of its founding members. Together we will promote sustainable economic and social development of Nepal in order to improve the lives of all the people of this beautiful country.
Tadao Chino
President
