Knowledge Products

This annual publication showcases the results from knowledge management initiatives of the East Asia Department for each year. It is a compendium of abstracts from 38 strategic knowledge products and services (KPS) completed in 2008 and provides web links to select full reports.

This paper examines the potential long-term impacts of global climate change on agricultural production and trade in the People's Republic of China (PRC). Using an economy-wide, global computable general equilibrium model, this paper simulates the scenarios of global agricultural productivity change induced by climate change up to 2080. The results suggest that with the anticipated decline in agriculture share of gross domestic product, the impact of climate change on the PRC's macro economy will be moderate.

In 2008, back-to-back crises struck the international markets. A soar in food prices hit the Asian rice industry just months before a financial crisis in the United States reverberated around the world, sending national economies into flux. For the People's Republic of China (PRC), the impact of both crises presented the following three major challenges for the country's manufacturing and agriculture sectors . This ADB policy paper looks at how the PRC can turn these challenges into opportunities for a more prosperous future, and suggests a one-time sharp increase of government investments in the country's successful but constrained Comprehensive Agriculture Development Program (CAD).

The Consultation Workshop on ADB-PRC Cooperation in Vocational Education was held on 25 June in Beijing, People's Republic of China (PRC), which was co-organized by the Asian Development Bank and PRC's Ministry of Finance. The workshop aimed at promoting knowledge cooperation among ADB, line ministries, and concerned provinces, for value addition and better implementation of ADB TAs and potential ADB financing in education sector.

Lakes and wetlands in the People's Republic of China are facing serious threats. The experience of three lake restoration programs highlights how a strong and consistent political leadership, integrated planning and analysis, and effective management structures and financial engineering can usher in successful results.

The Ministry of Finance and ADB are calling for articles on good practices to share experiences gained through implementation of foreign funded projects in the PRC, including projects supported by ADB, World Bank, or other foreign financing sources.

Recognizing the growing role of knowledge in alleviating poverty in its developing member countries (DMCs), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is committed to become a learning institution and a primary source of development knowledge in Asia and the Pacific.

To fulfill this commitment in the People's Republic of China (PRC), ADB works closely with its development partners in the PRC for sharing knowledge.

A series of Knowledge Showcase leaflets highlight innovative ideas from ADB technical assistance and other knowledge products to promote further discussion and research.
