Poverty Reduction Key to Sustaining Economic Growth: ADB Study

National Strategy and Regulatory Framework for Philippine Microinsurance Launched

Kunio Senga, new director general of the ADB Southeast Asia Department, joined the launch on 29 January attended by 300 representatives of microinsurance clients and institutions, government agencies, academe, and donor and diplomatic communities.

In his speech, Senga reaffirmed ADB's commitment to support the government as it formalizes and upgrades the microinsurance industry, under a project funded by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction. Finance Secretary Margarito Teves delivered the keynote address, followed by a signing ceremony.

Uniquely, the Philippines is host to ADB and is a founding member and 11th largest shareholder. It is the fifth largest borrower, accounting for about 7% of total sovereign and nonsovereign lending, while it is also one of the largest clients for private sector lending and equity investments, and is a supplier, winning bids under ADB loans and technical assistance projects.
