Equity investment in the private sector

Since 1983, ADB has used equity investments to directly support private enterprises, private equity funds, and financial institutions. The equity component of our investment portfolio has increased steadily since 1994, reflecting the increased demand for risk capital.

Our policy is to dispose of our investments on a regular basis. Our primary goal is to reduce poverty in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific, and equity investment is one means to that end. Therefore we favor recycling funds as soon as an investment has fulfilled its development role.

We use our own comparatively small equity investments to catalyze larger investments and attract international capital to the region. We oversee risk management and corporate governance to achieve results compatible with our development goals.
