Social infrastructure projects funded by ADB

We support certain private sector projects that strengthen the social infrastructure of developing countries. Access to better health and education facilities has a direct impact on the earning power of the poor. Often, involvement by the private sector can deliver social services more cheaply or efficiently.

RMIT International University in Viet Nam (2001)

We are funding a foreign-owned private university in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. In this way, we support the government's effort to strengthen human resources development.

The new university will:

  • provide international quality education
  • specialize in information technology, engineering, and business administration
  • offer undergraduate and graduate programs, English courses and industry training
  • enroll up to 4,000 full time students.

Construction program includes:

  • main campus building, including a learning resource center
  • faculty building
  • student and staff amenity building
  • equipment, furniture and fixtures.

Development impact

By educating students for work in the market economy, the new university will increase productivity and reduce poverty. Scholarship schemes will give students from low-income families access to tertiary education. New technology and teaching methods will raise the standard of tertiary education, and upgrade the skills of local teaching staff.

Cost: US$25.5 million
ADB Assistance: US$7.5 million loan without government guarantee
