Orientation Program for DMC Officials
Updated: 10 March 2008

The program introduces ADB to officials of Developing Member Countries (DMC) with the aim of improving understanding of ADB's changing role in the Asia-Pacific region.

Background

The orientation program is an intensive 2.5- to 3-week program for invited DMC officials, focused on ADB policies and procedures, selected aspects of development planning, and project management skills.

The annual program will give DMC officials a better understanding of ADB's changing role in the Asia and Pacific region, and provide opportunities for participants to

  • learn more about ADB policies, procedures, and activities in their countries;
  • upgrade their skills in development planning and project management; and
  • meet and strengthen relationships with ADB staff and counterpart DMC officials.

Program Benefits

The orientation program is expected to

  • increase the effectiveness of ADB's development efforts in DMCs and
  • promote regional cooperation and integration (RCI) activities
by strengthening the capacity of DMC officials to plan and manage ADB-assisted programs and projects.

At the end of the program, participants will

  • Develop insight into ADB's strategic business agenda;
  • Learn about ADB's policies, procedures, and operations;
  • Hone skills in planning, managing, monitoring, and evaluating development activities;
  • Develop relations with ADB's regional department and resident mission staff; and,
  • Share experiences and establish relations with other DMC officials.

Participants

The number of participants has increased significantly from seven DMCs in 1989 to 37 in 2007. To date, over 400 officials from ADB's DMCs have participated the program. Regional departments nominate officials from DMCs that borrow from ADB and/or are counterparts to ADB in implementing ADB-financed projects and programs.
