ADB Assistance

ADB is providing technical assistance to the PRC Government to prepare a project feasibility study, environment impact assessment, and resettlement plan to satisfy requirements for ADB financing of the proposed loan project.

Prior to approval of a loan, ADB would have to be satisfied that the project would adhere to its strict policies on Environment, Involuntary Resettlement, and Indigenous Peoples.

The project's cost is about $550 million, of which ADB may provide $200 million through a loan. The railway would be operational by 2009. It is expected that ADB's Board of Directors will consider financing of the project sometime during the last quarter of 2004.

It is in line with the Country Strategy and Program 2004-2006, which contains the Project Concept Paper
