Project Strategy

In order to achieve this vision, it is important that the GMS countries:

It is the aim of the BCI to contribute to improving livelihoods of the beneficiaries. In phase I (2005-2008), attention will be given to assessing the poverty situation and offering interventions with the aim of contributing to poverty reduction.

This will entail

• cash benefits for labor provided by local people in carrying out detailed survey and demarcation of selected priority biodiversity corridors
• participation in restoration, management and maintenance work
• direct benefits from harvesting of fruits, timber, or collection of fuelwood and non-wood products.

In this phase, participatory multi-stakeholder land use planning will be carried out with demarcation of agreed zones of utilization and strict protection within a framework for monitoring compliance with guiding principles and regulations pertaining to conservation and utilization.

Phases II (2009 - 2011) and III (2012 - 2014) will be used for increased investments and consolidation of benefits from sustainable use and environmental protection.

The main components of the BCI are:

• Poverty Reduction
• Harmonized Land Management and Governance Regimes
• Restoring Ecosystem Connectivity
• Capacity Building, and
• Securing Sustainable Financing.
