Nam Theun 2 Hydroelectric Project
Updated: 30 July 2008
Supporting sustainable economic development and Poverty
Reduction Strategy implementation in Lao PDR
The proposed Nam Theun 2 Hydroelectic Project would build a 1,070-megawatt
power plant on the Nam Theun river in central Lao
People's Democratic Republic.
Full construction of the project is expected to begin in 2005 and
to be completed in 2009. The reservoir will be inundated by 2008
and power generation is expected to begin in 2009.
About 93% of the electricity generated by the plant would be exported
to Thailand and would generate revenue for Lao PDR through taxes,
royalties, and dividends. The remaining 7% of electricity produced
would be available for domestic consumption.

The project will
- export 5,354 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity to Thailand
- supply about 200-300 GWh of electricity to consumers in the
Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), and
- generate about $1.9 billion of revenue for the Government over
the 25-year operating period.
Lao PDR has significant hydropower resources and the Nam Theun 2 project has
been under consideration by the Government and private developers
for several decades. The Government has requested financial support
for the project from the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank,
and private investment banks.
