Poverty and Environment Program
Wangan-Aji Micro-hydro Project![]() Wangan Aji Irrigation Canal Wonosobo is a land-locked district in Indonesia situated at an average of 750 meters above sea level and surrounded with two high mountains of Sindoro and Sumbing. The combination of such topographical conditions and high rainfall conditions makes Wonosobo a potential area for the development of small and run-off river hydro-electric power plants distributed all over in the region. Despite its hydro-potential, Wonosobo imports electricity from the neighboring districts of Banjarnegara and Kebumen. Most of the community in Wonosobo and around the project site are working in the agriculture sector and involved with rice and vegetable farming. The monthly expenditures of most families lie in the range between IDR 250,000 and IDR 300,000 per family. Thus, most of the households live below the poverty line.
The Wangan Aji Micro-Hydro Project is a demonstration project funded by PEP that will generate electricity of about 970,000 kWh every year. This electricity will be sold to the state-owned electricity company (PLN) through its existing local grid. The project is owned and operated by a village cooperative of Wangan Aji and is expected to increase livelihood and income opportunities in Wonosobo. The project promotes catchment area protection and reduction of local air pollution through the replacement of kerosene lamps by electric lamps. The project will also bring global environmental benefits through the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by replacing fossil fuel-based electricity generation, particularly from diesel-powered generator sets, with efficient micro-hydro plants.
