Knowledge Capture and Dissemination Strategy

The Knowledge Capture and Dissemination Strategy of the Poverty and Environment Program (PEP) guides actors to:

  • solicit the systematic collection and assessment of lessons learned and good practices in tackling the environmental dimensions of poverty
  • promote effective dissemination of this knowledge to increase awareness among development policymakers and practitioners, to encourage the application of more effective approaches to addressing environment and development challenges, and to foster collaboration among ADB, its developing member countries (DMCs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other development partners

Approach

PEP is systematically gathering and synthesizing knowledge on poverty-environment relationships culled from the experiences of PEP-funded activities, ADB projects, and projects supported by other organizations. The principal vehicle to this end is the PovertyEnvironment.net. Information is collected and organized to contribute to improve understanding of the relationships between poverty and environment and enhanced capability to effectively respond through development interventions when such linkages are identified.

PEP knowledge-capture efforts are focused on ways to address situations where

  • the natural resources on which the poor rely for their livelihoods have been undermined by unsustainable use or other sources of degradation
  • there are unacceptably high health risks because of pollution or degradation of resources
  • there is a heightened vulnerability of poor communities as a result of environmental hazards and/or environment-related conflict

These responses may include, among others:

  • facilitating access of the poor to information and other resources
  • government-community co-management of natural resource systems
  • co-investing with the poor to establish sustainable resource management systems
  • employing the poor directly in natural resource management or pollution control
  • developing technologies with benefits for the poor
  • compensating the poor for their participation in environmental and resource conservation

PEP seeks to refine understanding in these areas and to translate them into operationally relevant forms for the use of ADB and its development partners.

PEP will also produce other forms of knowledge products to effectively disseminate information to its target audiences such as videos, brochures, publications, and other communication materials.

Means of Information Dissemination

As noted, the primary vehicle for information dissemination is electronic: through this PEP website and the separately maintained and global PovertyEnvironment.net.

This PEP website serves as repository of lessons learned and good practices in addressing poverty-environment issues as identified by PEP and will focus on challenges facing Asia and the Pacific.

The PovertyEnvironment.net, a dedicated global website on poverty-environment initiatives, serves as the vehicle to share knowledge and foster informal exchange and collaboration among poverty-environment stakeholders including country agencies, NGOs, community-based organizations and other development partners. Through this site, multilateral agencies, such as World Bank and UNDP, are also invited to impart knowledge and lessons from their own poverty-environment efforts.

Good Practices

To support better dissemination of important lessons in this field, PEP is collecting information about good practices for addressing the environmental dimensions of poverty. We encourage international and national organizations, nongovernment organizations, academic and research institutions, and other agencies to share their innovative project experiences. You may send them to povertyenvironment@adb.org
