Development of Sustainable Alternative Livelihoods in the Sanjiang Plains, PRC

Objectives
The project seeks to develop and pilot-test innovative sustainable livelihood options for the poor households of 3-5 villages in Raohe county that are adjacent to the Naolihe Nature Reserve through participatory and community-based approaches and use of environment-friendly technologies and practices

Poverty-Environment Linkage
The project recognized that poverty and increase in rural labor force has accelerated the transformation of Sanjiang Plain to agriculture and resulted to huge environmental degradation in the area. Through PEP, the project aims to promote poverty reduction and sound environmental management by developing and pilot-testing sustainable livelihood options for selected poor communties in Raohe County.

Expected Outputs/Outcomes
  • development of sustainable livelihood activities in 3-5 villages in Raohe county
  • improved capacities of the community through formation of community-based organizations (CBOs) in the management of natural resources and through tripartite partnerships with local governments and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
  • policy measures of the PRC's Wetlands Conservation Program in addressing the poverty-environment nexus in Heilongjiang Province which can be further adapted in similar agro-ecological environments in the western poor regions of the PRC
  • Increase in income of poor beneficiary communities through the adoption of sustainable livelihood schemes
  • Decrease in poverty incidence
